Nonsurgical Technique Can Rejuvenate Old, Tired Eyes

During the natural aging process, the characteristics of the eyes change in predictable but aesthetically unappealing ways: the skin thins and loses elasticity, brows begin to descend, the upper lid can recede or enlarge, and the bones around the eye become more prominent. Though the standard for enhancing the look of aging eyes has been surgery, injectable treatments are becoming a viable alternative for taking years off of eyes.

How Beauty Concerns Change As We Age

How people interpret beauty in themselves may differ from what they find attractive in another person - just one finding from a consumer survey conducted on the BeautyforLife website. Visitors were asked, "What aspect of physical beauty do you find appealing in another person?" Respondents in their 20s, 30s, and 40s preferred a fit, well proportioned body; and youthful skin ranked at the top for respondents in their 50s and 60s. When asked, "Which part of your body are you most concerned about?" respondents in their 30s ranked abdomen/hips as their number one. Six Rules to Get Excellent Cosmetic Facial Treatment

In these trying economic times, people who feel the need for cosmetic facial treatments may be tempted to cut corners and seek professional help from a low-cost provider who may not be properly accredited, trained or supplied. The result could be a “horror story.”

That’s why the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors recently issued a public statement warning of the problems connected with “discount injectables,” the quality of which may not be assured, and which may be administered by fly-by-night practitioners. Their warning is applicable to the U.S. scene, as well, where many thousands of Americans may be contemplating treatments with Botox, dermal fillers and the like.

Injectable Fillers Produce Youthful Appearance

The latest strategy to overcome wrinkles, sagging facial flesh, bony hands and flappy earlobes is under-the-skin injections of cosmetic fillers with exotic names like Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, ArteFill, Juvéderm, Ultra Plus and Perlane. The idea behind all of these fillers is to inject an organic chemical, such as poly-L-lactic acid (in the case of Sculptra) or hyaluronic acid (in the case of Restylane) - which have been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration - to plump up the skin. This erases wrinkles, lines, jowls, creases and the like - for a period of time.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery: The Cutting Edge

Laser surgery has become the cutting edge in cosmetic medicine. Why? Because it's able to accomplish just as much as invasive surgical techniques in less time and with faster recovery rates. Using laser surgical techniques is also more precise, and produces less bleeding, bruising and scarring. A patient will typically get an injection of anesthetic, making the procedure painless, and be done in 30-40 minutes.

Non-Surgical Nose Job Update

A nose job without surgery? At a recent meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, Alexander Rivcin, MD, presented results on a new procedure, "the non-surgical nose job". This paper highlights the 370 patients on whom he preformed the new procedure over the course of 3 and one-half years. This is the first study that followed patients with the procedure through a several year period. This procedure developed by Dr. Rivcin uses injections of Radiesse to disguise nasal deformities like bumps or deviations, boost underdeveloped nasal bridges, and raise or straiten drooping tips. The results of this procedure last for about a year, at the end of which patients have the option of using permanent filler like ArteFill.

Plastic Surgery, the Who and What of It

Ever wonder who's getting plastic surgery? For the most part, it's women. Statistics compiled by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that of the 11.5 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures done in 2005, over 90% were preformed on women. In fact, surgical procedures for women showed a modest annual increase of 2%, while they were down 8% for men. People ages 35-50 years are the most likely to have a cosmetic procedure done, accounting for nearly half of procedures, compared with just 4% of people 65 and older.
